Why a Smell, a Storm, or a Bad Night’s Sleep Can Wreck You

Mold patients often describe an eerie sensitivity: a drop in barometric pressure before a storm, a stranger’s perfume, one bad night’s sleep, a little too much exertion — any of these can trigger a disproportionate crash. It is real, it is specific, and it is not “in your head.”
Five sensors, five kinds of threat
Your body runs a network of danger sensors, each tuned to a different input:
A drop in barometric pressure activates a vascular sensor (CGRP) — the same one migraine drugs target.
A chemical or a smell trips a chemical sensor (TRP) on your nerves.
Lost sleep and disrupted rhythm hit an autonomic and circadian sensor (PACAP).
Physical exertion and cell stress spill ATP onto a damage sensor (P2X3).
Any inflammation raises a systemic sensor (PGE2).
Why a healthy person shrugs it off
In someone with full energy reserves, these sensors register the input and the system filters it — a passing blip. In an energy-starved system, the same input crosses the threshold and ignites a full crisis. The trigger did not get stronger; your filter got thinner.
Why safety has to be sent on purpose
There is an asymmetry that makes this worse: danger signals are constant, while the brain’s safety signals arrive only in pulses. A constant signal will overwhelm an intermittent one — unless you deliberately strengthen the safety side, often, in small doses.

What this means for you
Your sensitivities are not neurosis and they are not permanent. They are the readout of a low threshold — and the threshold rises as you rebuild reserve and send the safety signal on a schedule. Reactivity is often one of the first things to improve when the biology turns the corner.
