You get your labs back and they are “normal” — normal cortisol, normal averages across the board — and yet you feel unwell. It is easy to conclude nothing is wrong, or that it is all in your head. There is a deeper possibility: the thing that broke is not the level. It is the rhythm.
Health is a rhythm, not a number
Your body is not meant to hold steady values. It is meant to oscillate — cortisol high in the morning and low at night, heart rate variable, inflammation cycling across the day. A healthy system has range. A sick one goes flat.
A “normal” average over a flat line is a broken signal

Flatness is the danger
Loss of rhythm is not cosmetic. A flattened daily cortisol slope and low heart-rate variability are among the strongest predictors of poor health outcomes — even when the totals look normal. The same flattening links jet lag, shift work, athletic overtraining, depression, and chronic fatigue: one underlying lesion, lost rhythm.
What to measure instead
If your averages are normal but you are not well, ask for the shape, not just the sum — the slope of your cortisol across the day, the variability of your heart rate, the pattern rather than the mean. Recovery, in turn, is not a target number; it is the return of range.
