Most things in your blood are kept out of your brain by a tight barrier. But fragments from certain molds travel up the olfactory nerves at the top of the nose — in near-direct contact with the brain’s emotional and memory centers — bypassing that barrier entirely. Once inside, they switch the brain’s resident immune cells (microglia) into an inflamed state.
The signature pattern
The result has a recognizable shape: new memories will not stick while old ones stay intact, word-finding stalls, and processing slows. It is the fingerprint of neuroinflammation, not of a psychiatric condition.
Why motivation and mood collapse too
The same inflammation reroutes brain chemistry — diverting serotonin’s raw material toward a neurotoxic compound and depleting dopamine, which is why motivation and joy can flatten. (When that produces an antidepressant-resistant low mood, it deserves its own conversation.)
