The Home Is the First Patient: Remediate or Relocate Before Anything Else
Treatment
In mold recovery there is one rule that comes before every supplement, medication, and protocol: you cannot treat a body that is still being exposed. The home is the first patient.
Phase One has one non-negotiable purpose: find what is activating your cellular danger response and remove it. Nothing else works while the exposure continues. — Andrew Heyman, MD
Confirm, then remove
The first clinical steps are environmental: confirm the burden with dust testing (ERMI, HERTSMI-2), then remediate — or, when remediation is not feasible, relocate. Treating the body while the building keeps re-dosing it is like bailing a boat without patching the hole.
Partial reduction is a bridge, not a fix
Sometimes a full solution takes time. Verified-clean spaces, HEPA filtration, and managing the car’s air can lower the daily load in the meantime — but these are a bridge, not a destination. The goal remains a genuinely safe space.
Keep it dry
Prevention is mostly moisture control: keep indoor humidity below about 50%, fix leaks fast, and treat the HVAC system as both a hidden reservoir and a distribution network that deserves inspection.
The takeaway
It can feel backwards to start recovery with contractors and dust samples instead of pills. But the sequence is not optional. Remove the exposure first, and everything downstream finally has a chance to work.
