Gene-expression tests promise something seductive: read your genes’ activity and infer what your cells are doing. In mold illness, that inference can point exactly backwards.

The direction trap

You would expect that if a cell’s energy machinery is failing, its energy genes would go quiet. The opposite happens: an energy-starved cell ramps its energy-production genes up, precisely because output is failing — a desperate compensatory signal. Read function off the transcript, and you can invert the truth.

Why genes and function drift apart

There is a long chain between a gene being “on” and work actually getting done — messenger RNA explains only about 40% of protein levels, protein does not predict enzyme activity, and activity does not predict real output. And the stress state at issue deliberately uncouples the transcript from the function.

The confounders hiding in a blood tube

Worse, a whole-blood gene test is an average over a shifting mixture of cell types; a change in your neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio alone can fake a “signature” with nothing changed inside any cell. Time of day (nearly half of genes cycle), the stress of the blood draw itself, and medications all move the numbers too.

The takeaway

Gene-expression panels are powerful for discovery — generating hypotheses about what might be going on. But for judging how your cells are actually functioning, inferring from a transcript is the wrong tool. For capacity, measure it — do not infer it.
