Why a steady signal wins by default
A constant signal will always overwhelm an intermittent one — unless you deliberately strengthen the intermittent one. That single fact explains why safety has to be practiced, and why frequency beats duration: many small daily doses of “safe” do more than one long session.
Three gears, not one
Your autonomic nervous system runs in three states — a calm, connected “safe” gear; a revved “fight-or-flight” gear; and a shut-down “collapse” gear. Chronic illness parks you in the danger gears, and ordinary triggers (a certain smell, a building, a stressful email) refire the alarm even in a clean environment.
The point of retraining
This is why nervous-system work is not fluff. You are not “relaxing”; you are repeatedly sending the safety signal the system has stopped generating on its own, until the pathways strengthen and the default shifts back toward calm. It is training, not resting. The alarm will not reset itself — but it will respond to being shown, over and over, that the danger has passed.
